Prysmian Group Insight
FOCUS ON
Committed to slashing our environmental impact
Prysmian Group is continuously
working on several initiatives
aimed at preventing and
reducing its environmental
footprint:
actions such as
the responsible use of raw
materials, optimisation of
logistic flows and responsible
waste management.
Prysmian Group’s wide-reaching
commitment to these issues is
testified by the prize awarded to
the Group in 2013 by the CDP
(previously Carbon Disclosure
Project) as ‘Best Newcomer’ for its
efforts to counter the climate change
and for the transparent reporting
of its own CO
2
emissions. As far as
product responsibility is concerned,
Prysmian has developed a number
of innovative projects, both in the
energy and telecom sectors. These
include the testing of the first
electrical system in the world with
a high-voltage, eco-sustainable and
high-performance cable — tested
with power transmission group
Terna, in the province of Milan —
and developing a new family of
fully dry, loose tube telecom cables,
which limits the consumption of raw
materials required to produce gels
and greases.
Staff safety
milestone in the
Netherlands –
730 days with
no accidents in
Eindhoven
Prysmian Group’s Eindhoven fibre
plant in the Netherlands reached
a new milestone in staff safety as
it passed 730 days since the last
Lost Time Accident (LTA). All local
managers were decorated with
a safety ‘pin’ and all employees
were congratulated on the result.
Frequent shop floor inspections and
quarterly safety platforms, at which
incidents and alarms are discussed
to learn local lessons, are recognised
as key elements in the process. To
make inspections as efficient as
possible, covering the whole plant,
and enabling rapid publication of the
results, an iPad has been used since
early 2013, now recognised as best
practice. Within Operations, safety
is at the top of the weekly priorities
as a result of the 5S-inspection.
Now Eindhoven is looking at the
next target of 1,095 days. The fibre
plant safety statistics go back to
1987 when root-cause analysis of
staff accidents was first started.
In 2013, the fibre plant received
the OHSAS 18001 certificate after
passing the final audit without any
non-conformities.
In the social responsibility
area, Prysmian has proven
its commitment towards its
employees through an internal
programme, designed to
manage a workforce of more
than 19,000 at a global level
and founded on four pillars.
They are: the development
and dissemination of a shared
common identity; an inspirational
management leadership model; the
ability to attract high-value people
on the market while developing
and managing talented people; and
an international and multicultural
working environment. In addition
to that, as proof of its commitment
to the needs of local communities,
the Group adopted a Corporate
Citizenship and Philanthropy Policy
in 2013, with the aim of regulating
initiatives in support of local
communities, linking them with its
own business activities.
