INSIGHT Issue 2|2014 - page 3

Results for the first quarter showed signs of volumes recovery
with positive organic growth after several quarters of contraction.
However, results have been adversely affected by technical
problems encountered in the manufacture of the submarine
cable for the Western HVDC Link project in the UK. The Group’s
technicians are working to overcome these difficulties and
resume work on this very complex project, which is the most
technologically advanced ever for a large-scale electrical
interconnection.
Meanwhile, a boost to growth came from important new
contracts awarded in this first part of the year in the high
added-value business of submarine cable connections, where
Prysmian once again confirmed its global leadership. INSIGHT
reports in detail how the Group has become the strategic
partner for Renewables in Germany, as it secured the major
BorWin3 contract, worth in excess of €250 million, while further
strengthening its market share in Abu Dhabi and Denmark. One
of the keys to submarine success is the further improvement
in installation capacity, with the Cable Enterprise ship now fully
geared for offshore connections, after Prysmian converted it
from a moored cable-laying barge into a DP2 vessel able to use
its own propulsion within the work site.
In this issue, we also focus on the continuously improving
sustainability standards achieved by Prysmian, which reached the
B+ level set by the Global Reporting Initiative Guidelines when
it released its 2013 Sustainability Report. This demonstrated
important improvements in both environmental and social terms.
In our Global Scenario section we discover how the passive
component technology is key to tackle the issue of broadband
connectivity across Europe, and not only. Prysmian is taking
advantage from this as its new products developed in 2013
satisfy the new customer trends for FTTH and FTTx market and
allow to have a good forecast for 2014.
