Prysmian premises to be used for social welfare

Loaned historical premises to Vilanova i la Geltrú.

For the next four and half years a company building, located in the centre of Vilanova, will be loaned to Caritas for developing “L’economat de VNG”, a new service distributing food to individuals and families to guarantee their basic needs and standard of living. The particularly interesting aspect of this social welfare project is that it will be managed like a supermarket, so people can choose the food items that best meet their needs at any given time. This form of aid and cooperation is already up and running in other European countries, where it has proved very popular.

Jordi Calvo, Prysmian Spain CEO, and Neus Lloveras, Mayor of Vilanova i la Geltrú, recently signed an agreement ceding the premises that will house this social welfare service for a period of four and a half years, extendible for a further one-year period.

The establishment, covering more than 1,100 square metres, consists of a 630 square-metre ground floor and a 505 square-metre basement.

For more than 50 years it operated as a commissary for Pirelli workers, one of the benefits the company provided all its employees. Today, in the 21^st century, the signing of this agreement marks the beginning of a new purpose for the premises: providing a service for the town’s most disadvantaged inhabitants.

At the press conference, Prysmian Spain CEO Jordi Calvo expressed his “Personal and professional satisfaction at being able to take part in this social initiative, which keeps alive the original spirit of the Economato Pirelli, allowing it to continue to be part of the history of Vilanova, home to many of our employees.

Neus Lloveras concluded the event with the following words: We on the Council are pleased to see that this commissary, so important to the history of Vilanova, is resuming its prominence.

New milestone in staff safety: 730 days with no accidents.

The Eindhoven fibre plant in the Netherlands has recently reached a new milestone in staff safety: the passing of 730 days since the last Lost Time Accident (LTA). All local managers have been decorated with a safety-pin and all the employees received congratulations on this performance which is the result of joint efforts over the past two years.

Frequent shop floor inspections and quarterly safety platforms, at which incidents and alarms are discussed to learn local lessons, are recognised as key instruments. To make inspections as efficient as possible, covering the whole plant, and enabling rapid publication of the results, an iPad was introduced early in 2013, now recognised as best practice. Within Operations, safety is at the top of the weekly priorities as a result of the 5S-inspection.

Looking to the next target of 1,095 days, Wilfred Meulenbroeks, QHSE & Facilities Manager, emphasised that every manager should maintain a safety mindset: “It’s our duty to exhibit best practice to all our employees, contractors and visitors. The fibre plant safety statistics go back to 1987 when root-cause analysis of staff accidents was first started. In 2009 Eindhoven received Draka’s Safety Recognition award. In 2013 the fibre plant received the OHSAS 18001 certificate after passing the final audit without any non-conformities.

On 6 January 2014 the Eindhoven fibre plant in the Netherlands reached a new milestone in staff safety: the passing of 730 days since the last Lost Time Accident (LTA). Roland van Laere, Plant Director, decorated all local managers with a safety-pin and congratulated all the employees on this result: “This performance is the result of our joint efforts over the past two years. And it’s something to be proud of, so enjoy it.”

Prysmian Group at work for Milan’s new Outer Eastern Bypass

Prysmian Group has been awarded a new contract to supply cables for the new Outer Eastern Bypass (TEEM) currently under construction in Milan (Italy), which will become the second bypass on the city’s eastern rim and be known as the A58. The contract has been awarded by the construction companies EUROIMPIANTI and SINELEC, both part of the Gavio Group, and CMB of Carpi.

The Group will supply a full range of energy and fibre optic products, including about 700 km of Afumex low and medium voltage cables (Afumex 750, Afumex 1000 amico, RF 31-22), which will be manufactured at the Giovinazzo, Merlino and Pignataro Maggiore plants in Italy. The cables will be laid along a series of trenches, embankments and tunnels. Around 150 km of armoured fibre optic cables will be supplied for the operation of alarm systems and toll boothes.

The construction of the Outer Eastern Bypass will improve traffic mobility in the Greater Milan Area. The Bypass will have three lanes in both directions (plus an emergency lane). It will have six junctions and will facilitate road-rail interchange thanks to roads joining the new bypass to metro and rail stations. The average speed of travel will increase by 34%, which translates into eight million journey hours saved per year. Fuel consumption will decrease by 15 million litres per year, leading to annual savings that will average out at around €50 million. Polluting emissions will be reduced by 141,000 tons per year. All told, the overall financial benefit should be in the order of €150 million per year.

Antonella Cadoni, Installers Sales Italy, said: “This is one of the most important public works currently under construction in Italy and being involved is strategically important for the Prysmian Group, after already winning orders for the Pedemontana and BreBeMi motorways, which once completed will link the 5 provinces of Bergamo, Monza-Brianza, Milan, Como and Varese. This is another contribution we are making to Milan and to Expo 2015, in which we are participating by providing our products and experience to the many companies from Lombardy and Northern Italy that are involved in this enterprise.”

All the cables will be delivered by March 2015. The project will be completed by 2015, when Milan will be hosting the Universal Exposition 2015 (Expo 2015).

Power and signalling cables for a new high-speed rail line.

Prysmian Group has been awarded a contract to supply power and signalling cables and accessories for the new LGV Bretagne – Pays de La Loire high-speed rail line running between Connerré (near Le Mans) and Cesson-Sévigné (near Rennes), in France. The customer is Eiffage Energie, which is specialised in the design and installation of industrial sites and infrastructure and is part of the Eiffage Group, France’s number three group and Europe’s number four for construction and public works.

Prysmian Group will supply about 1000 km of signaling cables and 15 km of energy cables, all produced at the French plant of Paron. The cables will be delivered from May 2014 to June 2015.

Jean-Pierre Bignaud, E&I and OEM Sales France, underlines: “The negotiations were tough and challenging: the project is a partnership between the State and some large installers, so we had to satisfy more than one customer and make a difficult deal with the customer over legal terms. It was also an interesting experience for us because it involved two of our teams from different businesses, T&I and OEM, who worked together to create the offer.”

The LGV rail line, which will connect Brittany to Paris with a time saving of more than 30 minutes, will be completed in late 2016 and will be served by TGV trains operated by SNCF, France’s national railway company.
