Tender won for aerial copper telephone cables.

Prysmian Group has recently been awarded a €2.3 million contract to supply self-supporting aerial copper telephone cables to a major Telecom operator in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia represents a key market for Prysmian Group business, because its rapid growth is demanding a vast quantity of telecom products like the Group’s, developed using the most advanced technologies and know-how. The Italian affiliate of Prysmian Group participated in the international tender called by the customer for this project.

Prysmian Group technology has been selected after a series of tests conducted during extreme weather conditions, such as cable resistance to strong winds, water and storms, simulating the Ethiopian tropical climate. Prysmian cables underwent successful initial testing.

The Turkish plant in Mudanya, the Group’s centre of excellence for the production of copper telecom cables, is now preparing to deliver the products later in 2014. The self-supporting aerial cables with solid polyethylene insulation, dry core and polyethylene coating, will be used for local telecom networks in Ethiopia, connecting thousands of people. Every insulated conductor will be twisted together to form a pair.

In every one of the world’s emerging countries, particularly those in Africa, mobile phone services are evolving at a significantly faster rate than fixed ones. In Ethiopia, the number of mobile users has tripled in the last three years. Prysmian Group is currently very focused on the development of emerging countries. This includes the African market, where we are seeing the development of extensive railway, road and telecommunication networks. By focusing on the quality and know-how of Prysmian Group’s products, the company continues to excel, while consistently meeting customer requirements.
