Prysmian, successful completion of Extra High Voltage turnkey project in Spain.

The Group’s cable systems form the backbone of the Cortes - La Muela complex, the newly inaugurated and one of the biggest hydroelectric power plants in Europe.

Prysmian Group has successfully completed a turnkey project comprising supply of power (extra-high and medium voltage), instrumentation and control cables as well as related network components for the newly inaugurated “La Muela” hydroelectric power plant, Iberdrola's largest in Spain and one of the biggest in Europe.

The complex structure was built with an investment of € 1.200 million by Iberdrola - a Spanish multinational specialised in the production and distribution of renewable energy. It will transform the small Iberian town of Cortes de Pallas - in the autonomous community of Valencia - into one of the main European centres for power generation from water mass movement. The hydroelectric plant will produce a total of 1.722 MW, with a saving of approximately 2.200.000 tonnes per year in CO2 emissions, and will provide power even when water supplies are low.

The project, initiated four years ago, has been developed by Iberdrola in collaboration with Prysmian Group's Research and Development Centre in Spain, involving a dedicated team of about 60, comprising engineers, technicians, project managers and account managers.

"We are very proud of having contributed to the realisation of this important renewable energy project," says Jordi Calvo, CEO of Prysmian Group Spain. "Iberdrola selected Prysmian thanks to an established partnership dating back to 1960, and to a successful collaboration in previous projects involving the supply and installation of power distribution cables within the Spanish multinational’s several other hydroelectric plants."

This project confirms Spain as one of the key countries for the Group. With a country turnover of € 380 million in 2012, Prysmian Group has over 800 employees in the region, working in five production facilities (four near Barcelona, including an OPGW centre of excellence, and one in Santander) and seven sales offices.

Prysmian has a long-standing track record in the development of milestone turnkey projects in Spain, such as submarine interconnections Spain-Morocco I/II and Iberian Peninsula-Mallorca (Romulo). The most recent projects undertaken by Prysmian on the territory include the recently awarded Mallorca-Ibiza submarine link and the record-setting INELFE project for an HVDC underground interconnection between France and Spain.
