Close Relationship with Local Communities Projects for the Communities Around Us

We work with communities where we operate because it is in line with our Mission, values, and Code of Ethics. Moreover, feedback from our stakeholders tells us that this aspect of Corporate Citizenship is important to them. Prysmian donated €200,000 in 2018 to local communities in the form of cash or in-kind contributions.

Prysmian’s Corporate Volunteering program supports non-profit organizations by encouraging employees to donate their time during their ordinary working hours. In 2019, Prysmian volunteers supported the non-profit group “Rise Against Hunger,” helping this project by packing 32 boxes of meals that will feed 22 children in a village in Mozambique for 1 year. Volunteers also spent a day collecting litter in a park near Prysmian’s Milan headquarters.

Creating a better workplace

We have a pilot project to improve the quality of life in 112 plants. (link to page)

Health and safety is important to us. The Group has had a "Health, safety and environment policy" since 2013 that guarantees a commitment to compliance with good management practices to ensure a safe workplace by adopting the  OHSAS 18001 standards. In 2018, Prysmian invested about €13 million and former General Cable €3 million investment in health, safety and environmental activities. Prysmian provides its operatives with training courses on equipment safety, proper waste management, and on the safety of machines and installations both during construction and in the maintenance phase. Courses not required by law cover on such topics as safety at work, first aid, fire prevention regulations, the consequence of alcohol and drug abuse, and environmental matters.

 

Life in Our Plants

In 2018 Prysmian continued to take steps to reduce hazardous and non-hazardous waste at its factories. In its Balassagyarmat plant in Hungary and at its Charvieu plant in France, non-hazardous waste was reduced by recycling PVC waste. In North America, it reduced waste at Rocky Mountains by increasing reuse of stems by 40% and North Dighton cut the amount of oil disposed of through better equipment maintenance. Claremont reduced the amount of solvents destined for disposal by better operator training. In Durango (Mexico) staff was made aware of a better culture in separating waste.

Plants across the group continued with projects to cut water usage, and significant savings were achieved in 2018 by Gron (France), Paron (France) Quattordio (Italy) and La Rosa (Argentina).

We foster long-term ownership and engagement. Our employee share ownership program YES (Your Employee Shares)  allows employees to purchase company shares on favorable terms, thus making them owners of a  part of the business in which they work. More than 9,200 employees are shareholders of the company.

In terms of professional development, our talent management strategy encompasses performance management and ongoing training for both manufacturing and professional employees in a work environment that fosters diversity and inclusion.

We have set specific targets to improve employee engagement and reduce the number of work days lost through injury. Beyond the company, we seek to ensure our suppliers respect human rights.
