INSIGHT Issue 3|2014 - page 3

The first half of 2014 confirmed the recovery in volumes, along
with a slight improvement in profitability, seen since the start
of the year, according to the results for the period approved
by Prysmian Group’s Board of Directors. With regard to the
Western Link project, CEO Valerio Battista reported that the
extensive and rigorous testing carried out to ensure the faultless
execution of such an important project has been successfully
completed and now provides a realistic view of the of the overall
impact on the project’s profitability. The high added-value Power
Transmission business has continued to grow and, thanks to
intensive tendering and continuous customer confidence, the
Group’s order book has reached a record €3 billion.
INSIGHT devotes the Focus On section of this issue to Germany,
and to the importance to Prysmian Group of being a strategic
partner to the leading European economy. This is particular
critical now, as Germany makes historic efforts to switch
from traditional to renewable energy sources, namely with
massive investments into offshore wind plants in the North
Sea, where Prysmian is committed to providing state-of-the-
art submarine cable and system solutions. Germany’s Group
Commercial Director, Hans Koch, explains in an interview
how Prysmian has become a one-stop shop for a number of
Germany’s manufacturers and industrial companies, as it further
strengthens its production capacity in the country. In the Doing
Business section, we report that an important new contract,
worth some €730 million, was recently secured in Germany for
submarine cables that will connect an offshore wind plant to the
mainland power grid.
Our Global Scenario section is devoted to Europe, where a new
Parliament and a new Commission are now in charge, while the
European voice of the cable industry is preparing to have its say
in setting the Union agenda. Prysmian CEO Valerio Battista was
elected as the new chairman of Europacable, the organisation
that brings together the cable industry throughout the continent,
from global leaders to SMEs. Mr. Battista tells INSIGHT in an
interview that cables are essential to reliable, sustainable,
affordable and publicly acceptable power and information
transmission, which is vital for economic growth across Europe
and the world. “As representatives of this key industry,” the
new Europacable Chairman states, “We stand as a trusted
source of information and advice to secure Europe´s technology
leadership.”
