DOING BUSINESS
New major submarine project in Germany
Prysmian was recently awarded a
730 million contract by grid operator 50Hertz
Transmission GmbH. It involves the design, supply and installation of multiple high
voltage cable systems between the offshore wind park cluster West of Adlergrund in the
German Baltic Sea and the mainland electricity grid, along a 90 km undersea route.
The contract with the offshore unit
of 50Hertz Transmission GmbH, an
operator of transmission grids in
Germany, includes options for grid
connections worth approximately
250 million.
will involve the design, supply and
installation of multiple high voltage
submarine cable systems between
planned offshore wind parks,
approximately 40 km north-east of
the island of Ruegen, to the Lubmin
substation in the mainland electricity
grid in north-east Germany. This
will be delivered along a submarine
route of approximately 90 km and
3 km on land. The 220 kV HVAC
(High Voltage Alternate Current)
3-core extruded cables (including
fibre optic cable system) will be
produced in the Group’s centres of
technological and manufacturing
excellence for submarine cables in
Pikkala in Finland and Arco Felice of
Naples, Italy.
Laying of the marine cable will be
performed by the newly upgraded
Cable Enterprise DP 2 vessel.
Production and installation will
start in 2015. “The project further
highlights the Group’s strategic
role to support the development of
renewable wind power, as well as
the power transmission industry’s
trust in Prysmian’s capability and
expertise,” stated Marcello Del
Brenna, CEO Prysmian Powerlink.
In Germany – the country with
one of the largest renewable
energy development programmes
– the Group is already involved
in connections to shore for the
BorWin2, Helwin1, HelWin2,
Sylwin1, DolWin3 and BorWin3
mega wind farm clusters in the
North Sea.
Prysmian to connect
Malta and Europe
Under a contract awarded by Maltese utility provider, Enemalta, the Group
is moving swiftly ahead to install three 132 kV circuits. This is part of an
extensive project to expand the national transmission grid to the Maghtab
substation, where the submarine link that will connect Malta to Sicily comes
ashore. The new connection will allow the Maltese grid to be fully integrated
with its European counterpart. All cables and accessories will undergo
intensive manufacturing at the Italian plants of Pignataro Maggiore and
Livorno to meet the delivery deadlines later this year.
