Prysmian Group Insight
GLOBAL SCENARIO
Prysmian Group has been awarded
a major
concerning
a frame agreement for umbilical
products for offshore oil and gas
extraction, by leading Brazilian oil
company Petrobras. The award
refers to a frame agreement for
360km of umbilicals, most of it to
be used in pre-salt fields, in 16
different cross-sections and related
ancillaries, offshore services and
qualifications, worth approximately
$260 million, with 50% minimum
purchasing commitment and call-off
orders to be placed within a two-
year period.
Petrobras has also awarded the
Group an extension into 2016
of the existing frame agreement
for flexible pipes, worth a total of
$95 million, of which $20 million
has already been called off for the
Macabu, Jubarte and Marlim Leste
oil fields. Both the umbilicals and
flexible pipes for the new contracts
will be manufactured in the Group’s
state-of-the art plants in Vila Velha,
Brazil. Vila Vehla is an industrial
plant with high production capacity
and a strategic location on the
Vitoria channel in the Espirito Santo
State, fully dedicated to Subsea
Umbilicals, Risers and Flowlines
(

.
The Group has a long-standing
tradition of more than 35 years’
technical and commercial
partnerships with Petrobras, with
Technical Cooperation Agreements
and supplies of flexible pipes and
umbilicals – both steel tube and
thermoplastic – for several Petrobras
projects.
“The partnership with
Petrobras represents a major
step forward for Prysmian
towards expanding its
business in the Oil Gas &
Petrochemicals industry,”
explained Prysmian Group CEO,
Valerio Battista, and Prysmian
Brazil CEO Armando Comparato Jr.
in a joint statement. The contracts
confirmed the Group’s strategic
commitment to investing in value-
added, high-tech businesses
requiring specialist know-how.
José Luiz Dacal Castro, VP and Head
of Prysmian’s SURF BU, pointed
out that Prysmian has achieved
important results and is about to
finalise the on-going qualification
process for six flexible pipes,
thus taking another significant
step forward in its technological
cooperation agreement with
Petrobras. The Group is also
strongly engaged in developing
products and technologies for the
harsher pre-salt layer.
In recent years, Prysmian has been
investing in the construction of
the Vila Velha plants for umbilicals
and flexible pipes, with the aim of
diversifying and further expanding
its activities in the technology
market and products for the Oil, Gas
& Petrochemical industry.
Thanks to the merger between
Prysmian and Draka, the Group
can rely also on two plants in
North America, thus broadening
the available range of products
technology to special Down Hole
Technology (DHT) systems. DHT
are manufactured in Massachusetts
and New Jersey and are
creating interesting cross-selling
opportunities to accelerate the
business’s expansion also in new
strategic areas such as ASEAN,
Northern Europe and Western Africa.
Down Hole Technologies include TEC
(tubing encapsulated cable), used
to monitor temperature, pressure,
and other parameters in individual
wells to better control flow,
corrosion resistant alloy tubing,
used to control hydraulic actuators,
inject chemicals and monitor well
conditions under some of the most
demanding downhole conditions
on earth, and SOFSC (Specialty
optical fiber-sensing cable) that
can withstand temperatures from
-150°C to +300°C, used from arctic
to deep subsea areas.
