33 The ECO CABLE label is based on an automatic calculation system developed at the Prysmian research labs, using recognized and measurable criteria in line with the main regulatory frameworks and requirements with a very specific focus on cable products. There are six main criteria that make up the ECO CABLE certification. The first is the cable’s Carbon Footprint, which is combined with other parameters to achieve a full “cradle-to-gate” approach. Other criteria are the absence of substances that are carcinogenic or hazardous to the environment; recyclability/circularity; recycling input rate, environmental benefits; and cable transmission efficiency, which for optical cables means increase in fibre density. One great benefit of the scoring system is that it helps the Group understand exactly how to make improvements to products that didn’t pass the threshold. For example, it might be possible to use different raw materials, or recycled materials, and cable density could also be increased in some projects, which in some cases might need customer interaction. That’s important because more and more customers are asking for sustainable products and with the ECO CABLE label it could be easier for them to choose the right solution. All the Group’s telecom cables have been assessed, and approximately 30% of them are now ECO CABLE compliant. With this project initiative, the Group aims at strengthening its sustainability strategy and active role as a promoter of a sustainable development as well as at accelerating the Group’s race to net-zero CO2 emissions. When customers choose Prysmian cables bearing its ECO CABLE label, they are making a choice for a more sustainable project.
