FTTH Council Conference 2018
Prysmian Group was a platinum sponsor of the FTTH Conference 2018. This year’s edition, held from February 13 to15 in Valencia, clearly demonstrated that fibre uptake is still on the increase, and that its widespread availability is essential in supporting a wide range of technologies that bring vast potential benefits.

Bandwidth-hungry innovations in areas such as 5G, IoT, cloud, smart buildings, Virtual and Augmented Reality, fintech and autonomous traffic all depend on high-bandwidth, low-latency, always-on wireless infrastructure. “Fibre is being called on for a variety of applications due to increasing network demand,” says Philippe Vanhille, Senior Vice President of Telecom Business. “As the leaders in the industry of energy and telecom cable systems, our aim is not only to advance in providing new innovative cable designs, but to offer a complete network solution, including jointing and connectivity products.” Philippe also took part in the session ‘Fibre for 5G: wire-less becoming wire-more” describing the importance of investing in a quality and future-proof passive network.
Alain Bertaina, Business Development & Product Strategy Director, participated in the ‘Voice of the Industry’ session and gave a presentation ‘Network innovations that will underpin the Gigabit society’. Prysmian also showcased the FlexTube®, which features 2112 fibres, the highest fibre count installed in a flexible micromodule-based cable to date.
Results of research executed by WIK analysing the socio-economic benefits of FTTH in Sweden and The Netherlands were presented at the conference. 87% of the FTTH subscribers gave ‘high bandwidth’ as their main reason for getting an FTTH connection. 94% of non-FTTH users indicated they would consider subscribing to FTTH if it was made available in their area.
The FTTH Market Panorama (prepared by IDATE for the FTTH Council Europe) showed that the number of FTTH and FTTB (fibre to the building) subscribers across the EU 39 countries* increased by 20.4% between September 2016 and September 2017 (51.6 million new FTTH/B subscribers). The take-up rate also soared to 34.8% from 29.9% the previous year. Russia added 1,826,000 new FTTH/B subscribers, Spain 1,612,371 and France 1,067,780. The number of homes passed (homes connected with FTTH/B) in the region grew significantly, reaching more than 148 million - a 16% increase compared to September 2016. Take-up in EU28** reached 32.4%.
