Prysmian Group and Telecom Italia renew agreement

PRYSMIAN

Under three one-year contracts, Prysmian will supply fibre optic cables and connectivity solutions used to implement Telecom Italia’s network and projects related to the Ultra-Broadband Digital Plan. Development of a next-generation network represents a strategic choice for the operator, which is building on its leadership position in spreading connected digital homes and businesses.

Telecom Italia’s current strategy is based on building and accelerating excellent network infrastructure. Planned investments in Italy will amount to around €11 bn, of which some €5 bn will go towards accelerating development of ultra-broadband networks. By the end of 2019, over 99% of the population should be reached by the LTE mobile network (4G) and 95% of the population with optic fibre. The 50 major towns and cities will have connection speeds of up to 1GB.

The contract is worth more than €33m, of which €28.5m is for cables. The remainder is for joint boxes for optical cables and mini cables and modular optical distribution frames from the ODF Flex systems range. These frames offer a high level of flexibility when signals are transferred from one optical cable to another within the distribution network.

The multi loose tube and mini loose tube optical cables will be produced at the Prysmian plants in Romania and Spain. The optical fibres used within them will be manufactured ar the centre of excellence at Battipaglia (Salerno), the plant which employs about 300 highly specialised staff and produces 9 m km of optical fibre a year. The joint boxes and modular optical distribution frames will be produced at Prysmian’s plant in Bishopstoke, England.

”Nine million kilometres of Prysmian fibre a year are produced in Battipaglia, in the heart of Italy, to link Italian and international communities, ensuring the quality needed to develop the telecommunications networks of the future,” says Carlo Scarlata, Chief Commercial Officer at Prysmian Cavi e Sistemi Italia. “Economic growth and consumer demand depend largely on always-on broadband connectivity, which is now capable of gigabit speeds. Prysmian Group aims to provide this service through a high-performance fixed fibre-optic network capable of satisfying users’ constant - and constantly increasing - needs.”
