Dear reader,

We’re very proud to present the second digital issue of NExsT magazine, Prysmian’s publication on the worlds of broadband and telecom. We’re also pleased to report that our first edition, published to coincide with last February’s FTTH Council Europe Conference, has been very well received. In this issue, we’re further exploring several themes discussed in issue one: how do we make next-generation networks a reality? Which technologies, strategies and approaches to rollout and financing are available today and in the near future?

To find out more, we conducted an exclusive interview with new FTTH Council President Edgar Aker, who discussed the Council’s call to action and new direction. Xavier Rodriguez Martin, CEO of dstelecom, winner of the FTTH Council Europe 2015 Best Operator Award, speaks about his company’s experiences rolling out fibre across Portugal, including rural regions. We also spoke to Crown Fibre Holdings Ltd about New Zealand’s goal of bringing faster broadband to 97.8% of the population.

Carsten Fehr, Marketing Manager Prysmian Group, explains the major consequences the IEEE 802.11ac wireless networking standard has for fixed networks. Alessandro Pirri, Director Connectivity & FTTx, Prysmian, looks at accessing higher frequencies and more bandwidth with bend-insensitive fibre. Rong Zhao, Vice Chair for the FTTH Council’s Deployment and Operations Committee, offers a closer look at a recent white paper on design and efficiency of FTTH networks. You can also read about the ‘Piemonte-Savoia’ interconnection, which enables secure energy exchange between Italy and France.

As a technology enabler, Prysmian Group wishes to share its views on the telecoms world and industry in this publication, whilst also offering a platform for discussion. We would love to hear your feedback, suggestions, questions and opinions. If there’s anything you’d like to share with us, please contact us at [email protected].
