MANAGER PRYSMIAN PLANT BATTIPAGLIA

The optical fibre plant located in Battipaglia (Salerno) employs about 300 highly specialised staff and technicians and is the only facility in Italy for optical fibre production. Prysmian Group recently completed its €30 million investment plan for the Battipaglia centre of excellence, in order to boost its competitiveness. These investments allow the Battipaglia plant to compete on the world market. Today, the plant houses some of the world’s most advanced production capability, technology and know-how.

“The optical fibre sector is highly globalised and there is very strong competition from Asian and American manufacturers,” adds Nicola Scafuro, Manager of the Battipaglia plant. “Prysmian is committed to remaining competitive and maintaining a strategic technological stronghold in Italy.”

Strategic importance

The demand for high-quality optical fibre is expected to grow in the next few years with the spread of NGNs. Installation of optical fibres in communication networks is currently taking place at a rate of 300 million km a year, whilst in 2006 it was a mere 95 million km, confirming its position as one of the highest growth sectors in the entire industry. Prysmian produces approximately 30 million km of optical fibre a year in five plants around the world (Italy, France, Netherlands, USA and Brazil), including around 9 million km in Italy. These are bound for strategically important cabling projects throughout the world.

Prysmian is the only fibre manufacturer in Italy and has the know-how, the technology and the manufacturing capability to produce broadband telecommunication networks. With Prysmian, the country can boast a prime leadership position in the strategic high-tech optical fibre sector.

On September 12, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi (r), visited the FOS fibre plant in Battipaglia.

"This visit was born from curiosity to see a Prysmian innovation centre in Italy,” he explained. “This company has been able to grow and now makes it possible to determine what may be the future of Italy. FOS is a technological centre of excellence and Prysmian is setting an outstanding example."

Promoting Italian optical fibre

To illustrate how Italy has all the technologies, know-how and production capability to develop broadband telecommunication network projects, the “L’Italia mostra la sua vera fibra” campaign was created. Watch the video here. For the website please click here.
