A new generation of women leading the industry: meet Ute Stiller

Discover the journey of Ute Stiller, Prysmian’s Plant Manager in Schwerin.

Advances in technology in the last century have been incredible. Perhaps less fast have been advances in society and workforce, where many industries are still dominated by men. But things are changing.

Someone who’s seen the shifts in attitudes first hand is Ute Stiller. In a career spanning over 30 years, Ute has gone from being one of the few women employed at Schwerin, to becoming part of a management team mostly made of women.

“I have a mantra – nothing is impossible, there is a solution for everything. This got me where I am today.”

Ute was born in Schwerin, Germany, where both her parents worked in Prysmian’s Schwerin factory, sharing their stories of the workplace when they got home. The factory produces best-in-class LV and MV cables and solutions for the T&I and PD businesses and has been a key employer in the town for over 50 years.

Ute herself began her career there in 1984 as a machine operator, before studying to be a mechanical engineer. Later, she became a test engineer in our quality department, where she learned on the job and developed a strong understanding of cable manufacture.

“Things are very different from when I joined Prysmian. We now have many programs aimed at finding and training talented people. For example, Make It, Sell It, and our Graduate Programs. Young people joining the business can try many areas before deciding what’s best for them.”

By taking part in programs like the Regional Leadership Program as part of the Prysmian Academy, Ute’s skills have seen her making big advances in the business. Now, she’s able to help guide young people joining the business.

I know what it’s like to work hard and move up the business. That’s why I want to give young talent joining us a great start to their careers, by connecting them with strong, experienced mentors.
