Background

 

Electrical Submersible Pumps (ESP) are used to lift oil from a production well, so it is important that they are reliable and operate safely for an extended service life in the harshest downhole environments.

The cable used to transmit power and sensor outputs to and from the surface is a key component in an ESP installation. The cable must withstand mechanical abrasion, corrosion, high temperature and pressure and should be available in a variety of cross-sections and configurations so the space the cable takes in the well bore is optimized and it can be installed or retrieved easily.

Prysmian has pioneered the development of reliable, cost-effective ESP cables for more than thirty years. Our cables are specified by operators for installations in all the world’s major oil production basins which is a testament to the quality and technical expertise that Prysmian brings to this application.

Prysmian’s downhole capability is based on the expertise developed by two industry pioneers, Draka - who developed the world's first tubing encapsulated cable (TEC) over thirty years ago - and Gulf Coast Downhole Technologies (GCDT) - who specialised in meeting the challenges of the operator and oil field service companies.

The resulting business, Prysmian’s Downhole Technology (PDT), has the products, design expertise and manufacturing capabilities to meet applications ranging from conventional systems to the most demanding applications.

Enabled by the technical expertise of our Research & Development centers, the extensive manufacturing global experience on both ESP and Downhole Technology products and our in-depth understanding of the demands of the market developed through our close relationships with many industry’s leading operators, EPCs and equipment manufacturers, Prysmian is proud to be the first and – currently – the only cable manufacturer to offer an integrated ESP cable solution.

Each solution is designed for the specific demands of an application so is the product of close cooperation between Prysmian, the pump manufacturer and the operator and integrates together the following elements:

ESP Cables

Reliable, cost-effective power cables that meet the demands of ESP installations while delivering reliable performance. They resist high temperatures, high pressures and attack by aggressive chemical environments. Prysmian ESP cables are designed to offer handling flexibility to ease of installation and maintenance.

Downhole Cables

The Prysmian Downhole Technology (PDT) cable range includes:

  • Tubing Encapsulated Cables (TEC) that carry data or supply power to a wide range of downhole instrumentation, sensors and electrically powered equipment.

  • Tubing Encapsulated Fibre Optic Cables (TEF) that are used for distributed temperature sensing, pressure, flow, strain measurement and acoustic sensing.

  • Hybrid Cables where instrument, power and/or fibre optic cables are combined to eliminate the need for multiple cables or optimize the space in the wellbore.

Cable and Control Line protectors

PDT Cable and Control Line Protectors hold, support and protect Downhole Cables and Control Lines from mechanical abrasion and damage due to high temperature, high pressure and sour product. These protectors are used with a wide range of Prysmian cables, including: ESP, TEC, TEF, Hybrid Cables and Control Lines.

We are continuing to invest time and effort to extend our capabilities with new ESP cable solutions in innovative and cost-effective packages that are easy to install, straight forward to deploy and can be relied upon to perform deliver reliable performance over an extended service life.
