Focus on innovative technologies and project execution capabilities to support the onshore and offshore wind power industry
Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry, confirms its growth strategy and targets regarding onshore and offshore wind power.
Power grid infrastructure is key to the transition to and use of renewable energy sources. Prysmian is increasing its investments and commitment to developing the best cable technology to support its customers, utilities, developers and TSOs in matching their decarbonisation targets. This will lead to exponential growth in the cable demand from 2.5 billion to over 7 billion per year in 2025. Moreover, offshore wind farms represent the most competitive and reliable source of renewable energy; according to a Goldman Sachs research, offshore wind farm capacity will rise from 7 GWh in 2018 to over 200 GWh by 2030.
WindEurope Electric City 2021 will focus on the decarbonised electricity system of the future. Prysmian Group joins other industry members at the event to showcase its state-of-the-art range of products and services for the wind farm industry. The Group’s executives will be on site to discuss its capabilities as a “one-stop solution provider” to design turnkey cable systems, employing extensive engineering resources, manufacturing facilities and a wide range of advanced installation tools. The Group complements its offer with technically advanced Windflex and Feltoflex cable solutions for wind turbines, its PRY-CAM breakthrough technology and solutions for the monitoring of electrical assets, and the Power Link Cable Solution — the innovative, enhanced cable asset management service for critical power links service, designed to provide a comprehensive and effective management of submarine cable operations, from prevention to repair.
Prysmian Group is therefore pleased to be present at WindEurope Electric City 2021 in Copenhagen, from 23 to 25 November (Bella Center, Booth #C3-A33), and showcase its complete state-of-the-art range of products and services for the offshore and onshore wind power industry, as well as its cutting-edge cable laying vessel Leonardo da Vinci, delivered in August. In a conference session on November 25 about how to further improve the competitiveness of Europe’s onshore and offshore wind industry, Prysmian EVP Projects Business and Prysmian Powerlink CEO Hakan Ozmen will discuss access to key materials amid rising volumes, auction design, and local value creation. On November 24, Prysmian Powerlink CCO Detlev Waimann will give a talk on the future outlook of HVDC cables and on how worldwide targets for wind power and other forms of renewable energies are driving HVDC power transmission. He will discuss new technology by focusing on concrete examples.

Prysmian Group’s commitment to supporting the onshore and offshore wind industry is demonstrated not only by its continuous progress in product innovation — submarine power transmission cables that are 30% lighter, such as inter-array cables up to 66 kV and AC export cables up to 275 kV (three-core) and 400 kV (single-core), and DC cable solutions up to 525 kV for wind farms that are very distant from the shore, all of which will be on display at the event — but also by its execution capabilities, including its new Leonardo da Vinci vessel, which is already in service. The Group is also making important investments at its centres of manufacturing excellence in Arco Felice, Italy, and Pikkala, Finland, and has recently announced its intention to build a new submarine cable plant in the United States.
WindEurope Electric City 2021 comes at a very important time for the Group, which is strengthening its prominent role in the industry through key wind projects in both Europe and the United States. Among the most important offshore wind farm projects completed by the Group are BorWin3, DolWin3, HelWin2, and SylWin1. Currently under construction are Dolwin 5 in Germany, and Saint Nazaire, Fécamp, and Calvados in France. The Group is also participating in the SOFIA Offshore Wind Farm, the largest wind farm under construction, and in the Vineyard Wind 1, the first commercial wind farm project in the United States, in addition to the other recently awarded US project — the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) — that will have a total capacity of 2.6 GW.
