Prysmian Eco Cable: first Green Label in the cable industry

ECO CABLE is providing clear information on the greenness of Prysmian cables based on three key drivers: SUSTAINABILITY, RELIABILITY and QUALITY.

ECO CABLE is the first Green Label in the cable industry. ECO CABLE uses measurable and recognized assessment criteria as established certification labels and complements net-zero Scope 3 target. This approach helps Utilities and Distributors strengthen their green supply chain and value proposition.

“The ECO CABLE product label proactively addresses the increasingly green expectations of the market and all stakeholders”, explains Massimo Battaini, Prysmian Group Chief Operating Officer. “With this initiative, the Group aims to strengthen its sustainability strategy and active role as a promoter of sustainable development.”

ECO CABLE label assignment is based on an automatic calculation system using recognized and measurable criteria derived from the EU Ecolabel Regulation no 66/2010 and in line with the main regulatory frameworks and requirements. The label can be cross-referenced and paired with additional certified sustainability protocols such as the EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) and EU Ecolabel (the environmental excellence label for products and services meeting high environmental standards throughout their lifecycle).

In order to receive ECO CABLE-labelling, each cable family has to pass a rating process examining carbon footprint, recyclability/circularity, recycling input rate, environmental benefits, cable transmission efficiency, and absence of substances that are carcinogenic, mutagenic, toxic for reproduction, or hazardous for the environment.

The Prysmian Group Sustainability Scorecard indicates 20% of all products are to be assessed using ECO CABLE criteria by 2022. A fully automated design-to-sustainability approach will allow the Group to have 85% of its cable product families covered by carbon footprint assessment by 2022. ECO CABLE labelled products for the Energy business were available in Italy early May and will be available in France, Spain, Germany by Q3 and the Nordics by the end of the year.

ECO CABLE is just one step Prysmian is taking in its race to net-zero CO2 emissions. Other innovative initiatives on the Group’s path to sustainability are:

Alesea: an IoT solution for smarter and easier cable inventory management
P-Laser: 100% recyclable, eco-sustainable cable technology, deployed in HVDC applications in low carbon projects
PRY-CAM: breakthrough technology for condition assessment of electrical system efficiency
