Mass production begins for Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind cables

Dominion Energy offshore

Prysmian Group has started mass production of 880 kilometers of export and inter-array cables needed for Dominion Energy’s 2.6 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, Prysmian Group’s second offshore wind project under construction in the U.S.

Engineers at Prysmian’s centers of manufacturing excellence for submarine cable production have been preparing for a year to ensure perfect execution of the company’s largest-ever production run for High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) export cables: 9 independent Export Cables for a total length of 566 km.

The export cables will be produced in Arco Felice, Italy, and Pikkala, Finland, while the inter-array cables will be manufactured in Nordenham, Germany. To manufacture the cables for his project, Prysmian has added additional storage capacity at its Pikkala plant.

The order will keep the two plants (Pikkala and Arco Felice) running for over two years through to April 2025, while one of the next steps will be to start production of the inter-array cables at Nordenham.

“The start of manufacturing of our largest-ever production run for HVAC export cables is another demonstration of how Prysmian Group can successfully meet the needs of every project, no matter how challenging,”

Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) is located around 27 miles (43 km) off the coast of Virginia Beach. Prysmian Group will provide a total of approximately 560 km of three 3-core 220 kV HVAC export cables, with XLPE insulation and single-wire armouring measuring approximately 62 km each, and 320 km of 3-core 66 kV offshore inter-array cables with XLPE insulation.

The project is expected to be in service in 2026, and is a critical resource for a clean energy future in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Once fully operational, the offshore wind farm, consisting of 176 turbines, will be capable of supplying clean, reliable renewable power to up to 660,000 households.

Prysmian Group is working in partnership with DEME Offshore. Both companies are leaders in their fields and have partnered to offer a winning solution to Dominion Energy.

The Group is investing $200 million in the United States as part of its commitment to supporting the role of offshore wind power in the U.S. energy transition. President Joe Biden has set a target of installing 30 GW in offshore wind power by 2030 to achieve the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources to cope with global warming.

The next big milestone for Prysmian Group will be the finalization of the design, including the installation campaigns that start in the second half of 2024.
