2020 Infrastructure Project award
“We are honoured to receive this prize for the Crete-Peloponnese submarine power link. It was regarded as a record-breaking project, as it was the first installation of a 135 km submarine cable system at a record water depth of approximately 1,000 m. Innovation is the main driver of our Group, which employed for this project a pioneering cable technology based on a synthetic armour, which is 30% lighter than steel and makes increasingly deeper installations possible.”

This project links for the first time the island of Crete to the mainland power grids, making a mark in the history of Greece. Prysmian Group was responsible for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of an HVAC (High Voltage Alternating Current) cable system composed of 150 kV three-core cables with XLPE insulation and double-wire armouring.
This important acknowledgment proves once again Prysmian Group’s role and commitment as a key player in submarine connections in Europe, and in particular in the Mediterranean area, enabling the transition to green and renewable energy. The significant environmental relevance of this project further consolidates the successful and long-term relationship with IPTO (Independent Power Transmission Operator), which selected Prysmian Group for this project in 2018.
“We are very proud to be part of such a strategic project that creates this important link between Crete and the Greek mainland for the very first time. Our long-lasting collaboration with IPTO enables us to demonstrate once more the quality and state-of-the-art of our products and solutions. Being able to carry on projects in such a difficult year, characterised by unprecedented challenges brought about by the pandemic, confirms the shared commitment of our people across the organisation to be always at our customers’ side.”
