Prysmian cable for milestone Avrasya tunnel construction machine in Turkey

Prysmian Group will supply cables to power the tunnel boring machine used for the construction of the undersea tunnel between Europe and Asia

Once again, Prysmian Group is playing an important role in the realization of a major infrastructure project in Turkey: power feeding to the tunnel-boring machine used for the construction of the 14.6 km-long Avrasya Tunnel by ways of a new special cable by Prysmian.
The Avrasya Tunnel is a two-level tunnel designed for use by light vehicles only, like automobiles and minibuses and a true milestone in Turkey, running undersea between Europe and Asia. Ground was broken for its construction in 2011 and the machine used for its excavation is powered by special cable Tunnelflex TX produced at Prysmian Group’s plant in Merlino (Italy). Contract was awarded by Yapı Merkezi İnşaat ve Sanayi A.Ş. and SK Engineering & Construction Co.Ltd.
The cable, specially manufactured for this project, runs along the full length of the Avrasya Tunnel and will be used until tunnel construction project is completed. It has enhanced features like flexibility, high impact-resistance and the ability to be rolled and unrolled multiple times. The Avrasya Tunnel is a project involving an investment of US $ 1,245,121,000, and the tunnel-boring machine used for its construction is only the second in the world with 11-bar pressure resistance.
Prysmian Group has supplied cables for other major tunnel projects, specifically in Turkey. The most recent of these are Marmaray’s Ayrılıkçeşmesi – Üsküdar and Yenikapı – Sirkeci tunnels, as well as the Gerede Tunnels. Prysmian Group continues to produce special cables for top infrastructure projects in Turkey.
