Prysmian to present “state of the art” innovative technologies for power transmission and distribution, at the 2007 World Energy Congress in Rome.

New underground cable systems with reduced costs and increased reliability.

Milan, Italy   -   31/10/2007 - 12:00 AM

Reduced Environmental impact for power transmission networks. On-line monitoring to prevent down-time and boost networks efficiency.

Prysmian also presents its latest innovations in cables for the OG&P sector. New products and valued added services for the transmission of renewable energies.

Milan, October 31st, 2007 - Prysmian Cables & Systems, a worldwide leading player in the energy and telecom cables industry, is to present its latest “state of the art” technological breakthroughs in the field of cables and systems for power transmission and distribution at the 2007 World Energy Congress in Rome (11-15 November 2007). Developed in Prysmian’s R&D laboratories for operators of electricity transmission grids and utilities companies, these breakthroughs include such feats as:

  • New extruded polymeric insulation cable systems for the transmission of direct current electricity up to 500 Mw: this kind of system costs less than traditional alternate current connections, making it easier and cheaper to connect isolated or remote networks and therefore to contribute to the transmission network’s overall development.
  • Advanced network monitoring/diagnostic systems, including the use of internet, with optic fibre cables that allow utility companies to exploit their assets to the full according to demand, also facilitating the prevention of down-time and boosting overall network efficiency.

“The introduction of innovative products and processes allows us to develop underground cable connections with reduced costs and increased reliability - explains Fabio Romeo, Prysmian Head of Energy Business-. Greater use of underground cable connections has the obvious advantage of reducing the transmission network’s environmental impact, and this obviously eases the process of obtaining planning permission from local authorities and other bodies involved in the development of new energy infrastructure projects.”

In line with its strategy of focussing on market segments with the highest technological content and the greatest added value, in recent years Prysmian has increased its investments in research and development by 2% a year. Overall the group can count upon 7 research centres in Europe, the USA and South America, involving over 300 researchers.

“The decision to make our presence felt at the World Energy Congress through our role as Official Sponsor – continues Romeo – is part of Prysmian’s strategy of getting ever closer to its customers. We specialise in creating partnership relationships with utilities and grid operators, carrying out turn-key projects that range from the design of transmission and distribution networks to their installation and constant monitoring. And we devote special attention to the development of new technologies for the transmission of energy from renewable sources.”

Cables and systems for the renewable energies sector
Energy generation from renewable sources is a worldwide initiative which Prysmian is proud to support through the design and development of innovative cabling solutions for both wind and solar power. Prysmian's R&D activities in the renewable energy sector have paralleled the emergence of the various technologies, and indeed Prysmian have been involved in co-development projects with the early pioneers. High performance, extended life expectancy and high reliability are all features of the Prysmian product portfolio, which together with innovative value added services (pre-connectorised cables, harnessing etc.) deliver bespoke solutions to a number of global partners. Prysmian is set to continue its strong investment in this sector, to develop new and enhanced products and services to further the effectiveness and efficiency of renewable energy sources.

Industrial Cables
At the WEC 2007 Prysmian will be presenting its own range of industrial cables for use in various applications in a wide range of sectors, from Oil Gas & Petrochemicals to infrastructures, transport (railway, shipping and automobile), mining, renewable energies, defence and nuclear.

One highlight of the Prysmian stand will be the presentation of new cables and systems for the petrochemicals industry, for use in oil extraction both in mainland contexts (Upstream, Onshore) and maritime contexts (Upstream, Offshore), and for oil refining (Downstream).

In particular, at Prysmian’s booth, visitors will have the opportunity to see the wide range of Umbilicals, multifunctional tubing systems which enable sub sea wellheads and manifolds to be connected to platforms or FPSO’s (Floating Production, Storage & Offloading).

PRYSMIAN STANDS AT THE WORLD ENERGY CONGRESS

Prysmian will be present in the WEC’s exhibition spaces with two stands:

• C40 (B8 hall) dedicated to provide the visitors with a complete display of our wide product portfolio, both for energy and telecom systems, with a particular focus on OGP business segment (onshore, offshore, umbilical, accessories);
• G20 (B7 hall) devoted to offer a general presentation of the Company to a wider audience, particularly to operators of electricity transmission grids and utilities companies.

At the Prysmian stands journalists will be able to meet company representatives keen to present and explain specific items.
