Major milestone in its quest to reach 1 million installed kms with its latest delivery of Blown Fibre.
Prysmian Telecom Cables & Systems has reached a major milestone in its quest to reach 1 million installed kms with its latest delivery of Blown Fibre now taking total sales past the 750,000 km mark.
The Blown Fibre concept - supplied by Prysmian under the Sirocco brand - involves the pre-installation of a tube network with the optical fibres subsequently being blown into the tubes as the network evolves and customer connections are completed. Sirocco, which is predominantly installed in access networks, is a complete system solution which includes the fibre bundles, tube cables, connectors, internal and external plant together with specialist installation equipment and services.
Prysmian has now been supplying the Sirocco system for more than 10 years and remains the world's leading provider of this highly specialized technology. Systems have been installed in many locations around the world including much of Western Europe, especially UK, the Middle East and South Africa, with new installations underway in countries including USA and Australia.
With the current strong focus in telecoms on high capacity broadband applications and the subsequent drive to bring Fibre to the Home (FTTH) the adoption of these blown fibre systems in the last mile' networks is set to rise dramatically.
Sirocco is produced at Prysmian's UK facility in Bishopstoke and Chris Pollock, Commercial Director for Prysmian Telecom Cables & Systems UK Ltd commented, "We have seen significant growth in demand over the last couple of years particularly in those regions such as Scandinavia which are currently moving forward with numerous FTTH initiatives. In addition many of our customers have just created their tube infrastructures and the additional fibre demand has yet to come. I fully expect to pass the 1 million fibre km mark sometime in the very near future".
