SeaflameTM cables for new Regent C 6250 and C 6226 cruise liners

Prysmian has recently signed an agreement worth more than €6 million with Fincantieri for the supply of 3,100km of low voltage HFXU armoured and un-armoured, sheathed and fire resistant cables for marine application, of which two thirds of the total value, or about 400km of cable, are SeaflameTM cables. The supply will be used in the new Regent Seven Seas Explorer C 6250 and Regent Seven Seas Explorer C 6226 cruise liners being built in 2015 and 2016 in the Sestri Ponente shipyard (Genoa, Italy). Since last year and with this major contract, Prysmian Italia has officially resumed its partnership with Fincantieri for the supply of cables not only for naval vessels but also marine passenger vessels.

As emphasized by Prysmian Italia Sales Manager, Salvatore Greco: “The Regent ship project is very important because it is the first supply of SeaflameTM cables developed by Prysmian in its own research and development laboratories at Fincantieri. It is a highly reliable product, which meets the most stringent requirements in terms of safety in marine passenger transport. It is for these reasons that Fincantieri has chosen Prysmian and we hope soon to be awarded other projects for other ships in the fleet.”

SeaflameTM cables are a new and innovative design of ultra fire resistant power, control and instrumentation cables with high performance and safety levels designed specifically for the main segments of the shipbuilding industry. The ongoing research and development activity in the fire-resistant cable field, both for the shipbuilding and the offshore Oil & Gas industry, which are designed to withstand and remain in service in the event of fire has led Prysmian to develop new products that allow its customers to meet increasingly stringent shipping regulatory and design and construction requirements, particularly the SOLAS’s Safe Return to Port regulations.

In fact, cable systems form an integral part of any equipment that uses or supplies electrical energy and so must always remain in service, even if there is a fire on board, to ensure the correct operation and safe return to port of any marine vessel — irrespective of the extent of the fire and surrounding conditions. A high fire resistance and excellent performance ensure electrical system functionality even in the event of a fire and ensure the performance standards in critical environments required by our customers. SeaflameTM also is an innovative interpretation of the installation requirements for cables and electrical components since it requires no metallic ducts to protect it from water spray or jetting and related mechanical stresses.

This important agreement follows that signed last year with Fincantieri for the supply of low voltage cables used in the construction of two ships, the luxury cruise ship of Compagnie du Ponant and the Gauthier ferry of the Société des Traversiers du Québec.
